The Corner Shop
This adaptive reuse project transforms an inner-Melbourne corner shop into a light-filled three-level residence that balances urban living with a strong connection to landscape. Retaining the character of the original building, the design carefully reinterprets the former shopfront for contemporary family living.
Glass blocks replace traditional street-facing windows, filtering natural light while maintaining privacy and offering glimpses into the lush internal courtyard. A series of lightwells, setbacks and planted spaces bring greenery deep into the home, creating layered connections between the interior spaces and surrounding gardens.
A white mesh staircase illuminated by triangular skylights forms the central spine of the home, connecting all three levels and drawing natural light throughout the building. Timber-lined interiors add warmth and texture, while green roofs, vertical gardens and open courtyards soften the building within its dense urban setting.
